St. John Vianney Parish Town Hall Meeting was held on
Saturday, May 24 from 9:00 AM to 11:15 AM.
The meeting started with an opening prayer led by Parish Council member Pamela Bjorklund.
Several interesting reports were offered including Richard Haro's report on the Liturgy Committee, Steve Ayupan's report on the building project, and Chris Ortis' report on the Youth and Young Adult programs.
Five members of the parish council were elected: Chris Ortis, Olga Rodriguez (incumbent), Patricia Rivera, Mary Ann Andrade, and Brian Rokita.
Other members of the parish council include: Steve Ayupan, Pamela Bjorklund, and Carolan Scanlon.
Annabella Estrada announced the start of a new, two year Spanish language Confirmation preparation program to start in September.
Ellen Turner, in giving her update on Social Justice activities in the parish, challenged the parish to
"Go Green" by eliminating Styrofoam from the parish facilities.
The request was for all organizations using St. John Vianney to use reusable or bio-degradable cups and dinner ware.
A quick vote on the proposal was taken and passed with almost all agreeing to stop using Styrofoam.
The San Jose Police Department made a very educational presentation about gang activity in our area.
The Sheriff's department also had a representative there to answer questions.
The single most important thing to do seems to be awareness. Kids with strong parental involvement are not as likely to be recruited into gangs, so supporting family ties is crucial.
Although the turn out was disappointing (It was a three day holiday, with graduations, etc.) everyone seemed to have enjoyed the meeting.
A lot of folks hung out in the parking lot afterwards, reluctant to go home, enjoying each other's company.
