About
our Parish:
Our Parish, founded by Fr. Fred Cook in 1952, was developed from a 'mission' of old St. Patrick's Church. The
groundbreaking ceremony for our church building also took place that year. Our first Mass, celebrated on Easter
Sunday (1952), was attended by 780 parishioners in what is now called the Rectory. By Christmas in 1953 we celebrated
our first Mass in our new building. One year later (1954), the St. John Vianney School opened. In 1965, Father Denis
G. Moore was appointed as our second Pastor. By 1969, Father Francis E. Reilly followed and was
succeeded by Father John Cunningham in 1973.
On March 15/16, 1974 our Parish experienced a devastating event. Due to unknown causes, our Church experienced a fire
in the sacristy which caused over $100,000 in damages. The following month (April 26-28, 1974) our dedicated
parishioners, fueled by their love for this Parish, renamed the Annual Fiesta 'Restoration Fiesta' in an attempt to
raise enough money for repairs. They did and also raised enough money for new stained glass windows.
In 1977, the City of San Jose celebrated their 200th year. St. John Vianney was the only Santa Clara Parish to be
celebrating a Jubilee (25th Anniversary June 26, 1977), with the exception of St. Joseph's celebrating it's
bicentennial, and St. Clare's which was 100 years old.
