Advent - Prepare for the Coming of the Lord!

At the top of this December issue of the Parish Newsletter I expected to find a scripture quotation and image about the Nativity, because ever since I was a little boy, I remember the 'excitement' of Christmas morning when I think of December. A Nativity scene comes to my mind.

However, we read from the Gospel of Luke about the visit of the Angel Gabriel to the Virgin Mary, and we find an image that helps us remember that visit. St. Luke wrote that Mary learned from the angel that she was selected by God to bear the Son of God. After assurance by Gabriel, Blessed Mary told the angel that she gives herself to God, "Behold, I am the handmaid of the Lord. May it be done to me according to your word." [Luke 1:38]

We celebrate and prepare for the coming of the Lord during Advent. The word "Advent" comes from the Latin word for "coming" or "arrival." Advent begins four Sundays before Christmas and ends with the Baptism of Jesus. The first Sunday of Advent, December 3, is also the start of the new liturgical year.

In addition to our focus on the birth of Jesus, the Advent season is also a focus on His Blessed Mother. The 'Annunciation' in Luke's Gospel is celebrated nine months before Christmas. This is the beginning of Jesus in His human nature though we begin to prepare to celebrate His birth this month with the start of Advent.

As we focus also on Mary during Advent in the United States, on December 8 we commemorate the Solemnity of the Immaculate Conception. This is a holy day of obligation to commemorate St. Mary, full of grace, who was conceived and born without original sin. The scripture quote comes from the Gospel reading of Friday, December 8, Luke 1:26-38. We also celebrate the Feast of Our Lady of Guadalupe on December 12.

The liturgical color for the Advent season is purple, the color also used during Lent. This is because Advent is also a time of penance in preparation for the Christmas feast.

We sometimes lose sight of the real reason for our preparation: the Word made flesh is coming! Let us preserve the spiritual focus of Christmas during the secular and consumer-driven 'Happy Holidays'. And, while we are 'decking the halls' let's prepare a peaceful place in our hearts for our Savior - and let's also remember His Mother. 

¡Advenimiento - prepárese para la venida del señor!

En la página principal del boletín parroquial de este mes de diciembre Yo esperaba ver una cotización de una escritura y una imagen de natividad, porque desde que era niño, recuerdo el ' entusiasmo ' de la mañana de Navidad cuando pienso en diciembre. Una escena de la natividad viene a mi mente. 

Sin embargo, leemos en el Evangelio de Lucas sobre la visita del ángel Gabriel a la Virgen Maria, y encontramos una imagen que nos ayuda a recordar esa visita. San Lucas escribe que Maria aprendió del ángel que dios la seleccionó para dar a luz al hijo de dios. Después del
aseguramiento de Gabriel, Maria bendita le dijo al ángel que ella se entregaba a dios, "Alabanza, yo soy la obra echa por del señor. Hagase en mí según su palabra." [Lucas 1:38] 

Celebramos y nos preparamos para la venida del señor durante el advenimiento. La palabra "advenimiento" viene de la palabra latina "venir" o "llegada." El advenimiento comienza cuatro domingos antes de Navidad y termina con el bautismo de Jesús. El primer domingo del advenimiento, el 3 de diciembre, es también el comienzo del nuevo año litúrgico. 

Además de nuestro enfoque en el nacimiento de Jesús, la estación del advenimiento es también un enfoque en su madre bendecida. El ' anuncio ' en el Evangelio de Lucas se celebra nueve meses antes de Navidad. Éste es el principio de Jesús en su naturaleza humana aunque comenzamos a prepararnos para celebrar su nacimiento este mes con el comienzo del advenimiento.

Mientras que nos centramos también en Maria durante advenimiento en los Estados Unidos, el 8 de diciembre conmemoramos la solemnidad del concepto inmaculado. Éste es un día santo de la obligación de conmemorar la Santa Maria, lleno de gracia, que fue concebida y llevada sin pecado original. La cotización del escritura viene de la lectura del Evangelio de Lucas 1:26-38, del viernes 8 de diciembre. También celebramos el banquete de nuestra señora de Guadalupe el 12 de diciembre. 

El color litúrgico para la estación del advenimiento es púrpura, el color también usado durante la pascua. Esto es porque el advenimiento es también una época de penitencia en la preparación para el banquete de Navidad. 

Perdemos de vista a veces la razón verdadera de nuestra preparación: ¡la palabra hecha carne viva ! Preservemos el enfoque espiritual de Navidad durante los ' días de fiesta como felices seculares y no conduciendonos como consumidores. Y, mientras que ' celebrando" debemos preparar un lugar pacífico en nuestros corazones para nuestro salvador - También hay que recordar a su madre.

Advent season is here!

The time of year when we are preparing our hearts, minds, families and the world for the coming of Our Lord Jesus Christ. It is the season when we can share our blessings with those less fortunate. So, before your family gets too involved with decorating your home, shopping, and making traditional Christmas foods, be sure to take a tag or two from the Advent Giving Tree.

The Giving Tree is located in the vestibule of the Church. Please take an ornament made by SJV  Brownies and Scouts. The tags are marked and should be taped to your new unwrapped gifts of toys, clothes, blankets, baby items, teen, and/or senior citizen gifts.

If you are too busy to shop this year, please feel free to make a cash donation and have us do the shopping for you. (Checks can be written to SJV Church-Giving Tree)

We at Community Ministry continue to help families in need together with the parish St. Vincent de Paul Society. They will be giving 90 families boxes with the makings for Christmas dinner. We will have a toy store on December 15th, supplied by the gifts you bring to Mass on the weekend of December 9th and 10th, and by SJV School. The School collects food and toys during their Advent Novena. We have toys for over 600 children and we also help the Emergency Housing Consortium and San Jose Care and Guidance. The SJV Youth Group also donates toys.

If your family, department at work, or any group you know of would like to adopt a family, please contact Pat Garcia at 926-3826. Adopting a family truly fills your heart with the warmest feeling.

The Advent Giving Tree has really become a Parish wide event with all ages taking part.

El adviento esta aquí! La temporada del año en la que
preparamos nuestro corazón, mente, familia y al mundo entero para la venida de Nuestro Señor Jesucristo. Es la estación en la que compartimos nuestras bendiciones con los menos afortunados. Antes de que tu familia se envuelva en las decoraciones de tu hogar, compras, y comidas Navideñas tradicionales, asegurate de comprometerte con un par de regalosde nuestro Arbol de Adviento.

El Arbol de Adviento está en el vestibulo de la Iglesia. Por favor toma un adorrno hecho por las Brownies y Boy Scouts de San Juan Vianney. Cada adorno tiene un papelito que indica si el regalo consiste en un juguete, ropa, sábanas, árticulos para Bebé, Adolecente, o Tercera edad.

Si no tienes tiempo de ir de compras no tengas pena de hacer tu donativo en efectivo o cheque, y uno de nosotros comprará el regalo por tí (Cheques pagaderos a SJV Church-Giving Tree)

Nosotros desde el Ministerio Comunitario continuamos ayudando junto con la Sociedad de San Vicente de Paul a familias necesitadas. Se distribuirán 90 cajas familiares que contendrán ingredientes para una Cena Navideña. También habrá un Bazaar Navideño de Juguetes que se
afectuará con los regalos que traigamos a Misa durante el fin de semana de Diciembre 9 y 10 y los regales donados por nuestra Escuela Parroquial. La escuela recauda comida y juguetes durante la Novena de Adviento. Tendremos juguetes para mas de 600 niños. También Ayudamos
al Hospedaje de Emergencia y Centro de Cuidado y Guía de San José. El Grupo de Jóvenes también donan juguetes.

Why are the four Gospels so different?

In the past weeks we've looked at each Gospel individually. To gain a better understanding of the differences, it's important to recall that the  person of Jesus as their community experiences Him now.

Imagine four articles on the life of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. One is written 30 years after his death by an 
African American from Mississippi. One is written 40 years after his death by a person in Japan. Another is written by a person in India 50 years after, and the fourth 60 years after his death by someone in Nigeria. We would not be surprised if the stories were quite different. Let's explore some of the Gospels' differences in terms of the purposes and audiences involved in the Gospels.

Matthew is writing for Christian Jews that are struggling with the question of whether they remain faithful Jews while being Christian, e.g. Do they still go to synagogue for Jewish services? Do they still obey all the Jewish ritual laws? Matthew wants to pull the Jews away from the synagogue and the "old ways". So Matthew makes a stronger case for the guilt of the Jews in Jesus' death (Mt 27:24f - "His blood be on us and on our children.")* compared to Mark's laying the guilt on both the Jews and the Romans (Mk 15:14f).
evangelists, Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John, were not news reporters. They were not trying to report day-by-day everything that Jesus said and did. Each Gospel was written at a different time, under different circumstances, for a different group of people, and with a different purpose. Each writer is trying to reveal the
Writing for a largely Gentile audience, Mark has Jesus say "Preach to all nations" early in the Gospel.  Matthew, writing for a Jewish community, has Jesus focus his mission on the Jews until the end when the Jews have rejected Jesus.

Mark's Jesus emphasizes Jesus' humanity, expressing human emotions (e.g. pity, anger, exasperation). Jesus is captured by the Jewish soldiers (Mk 14:43-46). John's Jesus emphasizes the divine - Jesus is in control of everything, has a "time/hour" for everything, takes charge of Pilate's questioning. Jesus gives himself over to the Jewish soldiers (Jn 18:1-9)

Matthew, Mark, and Luke all have Simon of Cyrene help carry Jesus' cross. But John says Jesus carried his own cross (Jn 19:17). This may just be John continuing the theme of Jesus being in complete control. Did Simon actually carry the cross for Jesus? We can't be sure, but none of the evangelists would consider this an important question.

One scripture scholar has suggested that the Holy Spirit made the Gospels different so that we wouldn't get hung up on the details and miss the big picture. Jesus was the Messiah. Jesus was God. Jesus died for us. Jesus rose from the dead. Jesus sent his disciples into the world to preach the Good News. On the big picture issues, the evangelists are in complete agreement.

Next issue we'll look into those "other" Gospels, like the Gospel of Judas, and the Gospel of Mary.

¿Por que los cuatro Evangelios son tan diferentes?

En las semanas pasadas, hemos mirado a cada Evangelio Individualmente. Para tener un mejor entendimiento de las diferencias, es importante recordarse que los evangelistas, Mateo, Marcos, Lucas y Juan no eran reporteros de noticias.

Ellos no trataban de reportar dia a dia todo lo que Jesús decía o hizo. Cada Evangelio fué escrito en una época diferente, bajo circunstancias diferentes y para un grupo de gente diferente con propósitos diferentes. Cada escritor trata de reveler la persona de Jesús como las comunidades lo experimentan en su actualidad.

Imaginese cuatro artículos de la vida del Doctor Martin Luther King Jr. Uno escrito 30 años después de su muerte por una persona Afro Americana de Mississipi. Una escrita 40 años después de su muerte por una persona en Japón. Otra escrita por una persona en la India 50 años después, y la cuarta 60 años después de su muerte por alguién en 
Nigeria. No nos sorprendería que los artículos fueran muy diferentes. Exploremos algunas de las diferencias en termins de los propósitos y audiencias envueltas en los Evangelios.

Mateo escribe para los Cristianos Judíos que luchan contra la interrogante de continuar fervientes a su Fé Judía y al mismo tiempo ser Cristianos (Por ejemplo Deben ir a la Sinagoga para sus Servicios? Obedecer las leyes de los rituales Judíos?) Mateo quiere sacar a los Judíos de la Sinagoga y de sus "viejos hábitos." Mateo hace un caso 
más fuerte de la culpabilidad Judía por la muerte de Jesús (Mateo 27:24 - "¡ Que su Sangre caiga sobre nosotros y sobre nuestros hijos!") * comparado a Marcos culpando a ambos Judíos y Romanos (Marcos 15:14).

Escribiendo para una gran audiencia Gentil, Marcos nos dice que Jesús dijo  "Hay que Evangelizar a todas las naciones" . Al principio del Evangelio de Mateo, escribieron para una comunidad Judía, el enfoque de la mision de Jesús sobre los Judíos hasta el final cuando los Judíos rechazaron a Jesús.

En Marcos, Jesús enfatiza la humanidad de Jesús, expresando emociones humanas (por ejemplo piedad, ira, desesperación). Jesús es capturado por los Soldados Judíos (Marcos14:43-46). En ell Jesús de Juan se enfoca lo divino - Jesús esta en control de todo, tiene tiempo y hora para todo, se apodera de la interrogación de Pilatos. Jesús se entrega a sí mismo a los soldados Judíos (Juan 18:1-9).

Mateo, Marcos y Lucas todos tienen a Simón de Cyrene ayudando a Jesús a cargar la cruz. Juan en cambio dice que Jesús cargo su propia cruz (Juan 19:17). Esto puede ser el tema de Juan de que Jesús está en control de todo. Acaso Simón cargo en verdad la cruz de Jesús? No estamos seguros, pero ninguno de los evangelistas consideraría esto como una pregunta importante. Una escrtura académica ha sugerido que el Espíritu santo hizo los Evangelios diferentes para que no nos ocuparamos de los detalles, y perdieramos el concepto principal. Jesús 
es el Mesías, Jesús es Dios, Jesús murio por nosotros, Jesús resucitó de la muerte, Jesús envio a sus dicípulos al mundo para proclamar las Buenas Noticias. En el Concepto Principal los evangelistas concuerdan completamente.

En el artículo siguiente miraremos dentro de aquellos "otros" Evangelios, como el Evangelio de Judas, y el Evangelio de María.

Parish Retreat & Town Hall Meeting

Earlier this year, when the St. John Vianney Parish Council learned that we would be getting a new pastor, several focus groups from the parish met to discuss their needs. One of those needs was a request to have more spiritual events at St. John Vianney Parish. Keeping this in mind, the St. John Vianney Parish Council held a retreat and town hall meeting October 14th. For two hours early that Saturday morning in the church, close to fifty people participated in the retreat entitled "How To Get Closer To God." One of our own parishioners, Pamela Bjorklund, was the presenter. 

Pamela's focus was to remind us that God is always reaching out to us because God is always present to us and loves us unconditionally. She shared with us that God is constantly inviting us into a deeper relationship and that we need to get our focus of attention off of ourselves and onto God. A suggestion that we were given to accomplish this was to make a habit of prayer. We were encouraged to experiment with different ways of praying so that we could find the best way that would help us get closer to God. 

Another suggestion was to learn more about God by reading Scripture, joining a Bible Study group, reading books, talking with others or joining a faith group. In the end, we learned that it is necessary to open our heart and mind in faith and trust so that we can see that God is reaching out to us. Pamela was able to open our eyes to the fact that we are all capable of getting closer to God. She did a fantastic job in her presentation.

At this retreat, we also had a Spanish interpreter available. Rosana Madrigal, another St. John Vianney parishioner, was able to capture Pamela's words and ideas and express them to the Spanish-speaking parish members who attended the retreat. The SJV Parish Council was grateful that both Pamela and Rosana gave of their time and talent on a Saturday morning to help our community with their spiritual journey.

After the retreat, the group moved to the SJV Main Hall for a town hall meeting. We were given the following information: a summary of the transition report, an update of the new building, reports given by the Spirituality Development Team and the Liturgy Committee and an update from the Finance Committee. There was also time for questions, answers and input from the people who attended.

We ended the day with a potluck lunch. As always, the food was great. While people shared the food that they had brought, they had time to visit with each other and to meet some new faces. The SJV Parish Council plans to have more retreats available. Please plan to participate. You will be inspired.

El retiro Parroquial y la REUNIÓN del AYUNTAMIENTO

A principios este año, cuando el Concilio de la Parroquia de San Juan Vianney se entero de que estaríamos obteniendo un nuevo pastor, varios grupos del enfoque de la parroquia decidieron discutir sus necesidades. Una de ellas era la de hacer una peticion de tener los acontecimientos más espirituales en la Parroquia de San Juan Vianney. Con esto en mente, el Concilio de la Parroquia de San Juan Vianney tuvo un retiro de ayuntamiento el 14 de octubre. Por dos horas El sábado por la mañana en la iglesia. Cerca de cincuenta personas participaron en el retiro reconocido bajo el titulo de "Cómo acercarse más a Dios." Uno de nuestros propios parroquianos, Pamela Bjorklund, fue la presentadora.. 

Pamela nos recordo que Dios siempre nos llega al corazón porque el se nos presenta y nos ama incondicionalmente. Ella compartió que Dios constantemente nos invita a una relación más profunda y que necesitamos enfocar nuestra atención en Dios y no en nosotros mismos. Una sugerencia que dio para cumplir es la de hacer un hábito de la oración. Nos Animo' a experimentar con distintas maneras de orar para poder encontrar la mejor manera que no ayudaría a acercarnos más a Dios. 

Otra sugerencia fue que deveriamos aprender más, acerca de Dios leyendo las Escrituras, reuniendo un grupo de Estudios de Biblia, leyendo los libros, hablando con otros o en unión de algun grupo de fe. Al fin, nosotros comprendimos que es necesario abrir el corazón y la mente en la fe y la confianza para que podamos ver que Dios nos llega al corazón. Pamela fue capaz de abrirnos los ojos al hecho que todo somos capases de acercarnos más a Dios. Ella hizo un trabajo fantástico en su presentación. 

En este retiro, de nuevo tuvimos una intérprete de español disponible. Rosana Madrigal, miembra de nuestra parroquia de San Juan Vianney, quien capto las palabras e ideas de Pamela y las expreso a los miembros habla Hispana. El Concilio de la Parroquia de SJV estuvo agradecido con ambas Pamela y Rosana porque dieron de su tiempo y de su talento en un sábado por la mañana para ayudar a nuestra comunidad en su viaje espiritual. 

Después del retiro, el grupo se movió al salón de SJV para una reunión del ayuntamiento. Se nos dio la siguiente información: un resumen del reporte de la transición, una actualizacion del nuevo edificio, los informes dados por el Equipo del Desarrollo de la Espiritualidad y el Comité de Liturgia y un actualizacion del Comité de Finanzas. Hubo también la oportunidad de hacer preguntas, y recibir respuestas por parte de las personas que asistieron. 

Terminamos el día con un "Pot luck". Como siempre, la comida fue un gran exito. Mientras las personas compartieron el alimento que ellos habían traído, ellos tuvieron tiempo de visitar los unos con los otros y de reconocer algunas nuevas caras. El Concilio de la Parroquia de SJV planea tener más retiros disponibles. Por favor planee participar. Usted será inspirado.

Rooted in Faith

One of the workshops I attended at the recent Faith Formation Conference Rooted In Faith, sponsored by five Northern California Dioceses, was
given by Fr. Ed Foley. It was an excellent presentation and I highly recommend hearing this Chicago-area priest if you ever get an opportunity to do so.

Fr. Foley spoke about four areas of Christ's ministry: gathering, caressing, dining, and bathing. He described how Jesus was always dining with people. All animals eat, to survive, but only humans dine. Dining is much more than simply eating. When we dine, it is a community activity. Dining is about sharing a meal, sharing conversation, and sharing ourselves with others. Fr. Foley said that we must have the experience of dining to fully understand and experience the Eucharist. He shared statistics that indicate children from families that dine, as opposed to those who survive on fast food and microwave meals without the ritual of gathering at the table, are much less inclined toward drugs, do better at school, and form stronger personal relationships.

Bathing is another aspect of Jesus' ministry that Fr. Foley featured. When we have a baby, we don't just wash it, we bath it. Washing would consist of spraying the child with water, scrubbing with soap, then rinsing. But we bath. We take lavish efforts to make the experience of cleansing into a time of pleasure. Bathing in the Christian tradition has to do with reconciliation.

When we gather as Christians we remember that we are dining and bathing together. Take the time to move fully into the ritual.

Another workshop I attended was presented by Rev. Kenneth We are, pastor of St. Rita, Fairfax. He shared the wonderful things his parish is doing
in justice work. It was amazing and inspiring to see how much a small parish could accomplish. They support a village in Guatemala, having built an elementary school, a high school, and paying the salary for the teachers.

Arraigados en la Fé

Uno de los talleres que atendí en la recién pasada Conferencia de Formación de Fé fué "Rooted In Faith" que traducido significa "Arraigados en la Fé", patrocinada por cinco dioscesis del Norte de California. Fue dirigida por el Padre Ed Foley. Una presentación excelente y Yo les recomiendo de manera especial que escuchen a este
sacerdote del area de Chicago.

El Padre Foley habló acerca de cuatro areas del ministerio de Cristo: Reunirse, Preocuparse, Cenar y Bañarse. Los describió como Jesús siempre estaba cenando con gente. Todos los animales comen para sobrevivir, pero solo los humanos cenamos. Cenar es mucho mas que solo comer. Cuando cenamos, lo hacemos como una actividad comunal. El cenar es compartir la comida, compartir una conversación y compartirnos a nosotros mismos. El Padre Foley dijo que debemos experimentar el cenar para entender completamente y experimentar la Eucaristía. El compartió estadísticas que indican que los niños de familias que cenan en familia tienen una tendencia mucho más grande a oponerse a usar drogas, les va mucho mejor en la escuela, y forman relaciones fuertes interpersonales. Esto es en comparación con los niños que no lo hacen y que en lugar de eso sobreviven con comida rápida y cenas de microondas sin el ritual de sentarse al rededor de la mesa en familia.

El Bañarse es otro aspecto del ministerio de Jesús. Cuando tenemos un bebé, no solo lo lavamos sino que lo bañamos. Lavarlo consistiría en rociarlo con agua, pasarle jabón, y desaguarlo. Bañarlo, es el desbordar nuestro esfuerzo para que la experiencia de limpiarlo sea un placer para el bebé. Bañarse en la tradición Cristiana tiene que ver con la reconciliación.

Cuando nos reunimos como Cristianos, recordamos que estamos cenando y bañandonos juntos. Tomemos nuestro tiempo para realmente entrar y participar de este ritual.

Otro taller que atendí fué presentado por el Reverendo Kenneth Weare, Pastor de Santa Rita, FairFax. El compartió las cosas marvillosas que su parroquia está realizando en el trabajo de Justicia. Es sorprendente e inspirador el ver cuanto una parroquia pequeña lleva a
cabo. Ellos mantienen un pueblito en Guatemala, han construido una escuela primaria, una secundaria y pagan el sueldo de los maestros.
