Transition Team Listening Sessions

The Transition Team has two final Listening Sessions set for Sunday, June 25, in the Main Hall:

Be Heard

11:30 AM in English
1:30 PM in Spanish

The New Pastor Transition Team is providing Listening Sessions for as many parishioners as possible. The Team has met with most ministries and groups over the past few weeks, but if you were not able to make one of those meetings, the Transition Team is offering two more opportunities to be heard on Sunday, June 25. The Transition Team will listen to parish staff members separately. The Transition Team will then meet to prepare a presentation to the new pastor on the state of our parish.

Each Listening Session will address the following questions:

  • What did you feel when you first heard that our pastor was leaving?
  • What do we need to keep?
  • What do we need to let go of?
  • What do we need to develop, begin, create for the future?
  • What gifts, qualities, talents do the people of this parish bring to such a process?

Spanish Paella Feast

A lucky group of parishioners gathered at the home of Manoli Kelly on Saturday, June 3, for a feast of sangria, lemonade, chorizo, garlic chicken, salad, and paella.

Paella Party

The dinner was a prize from the St. John Vianney Mardi Gras fundraising event for our Katrina sister parish. The winning bid in the Silent Auction went to Ray and Ellen Turner who then invited Don Marcille, Lily and Rudy Tenes, Rosana Madrigal and her friend Greg, Ann McEntee, Sylvia and Kevin Stoddart, and Joe and Valorie Nolan to join in the fun. Pat Garcia was there also, helping Manoli prepare and serve the feast.

PaellaIt was almost too pretty to eat! When we finally got into it, the paella was delicious. Manoli and Pat even provided appropriate background music. The weather turned out to be prefect and everyone had a great time. The feast was topped off with a wonderful selection of fruit and cheese. Yum!

Perhaps Manoli and Pat Garcia will offer a similar dinner for the Silent Auction at our next parish picnic. If so, come prepared to bid on it because these two ladies really know how to present a feast!

Deus Caritas Est
Presentation on the Pope's First Encyclical Pope Benedict XVI

Pastors, parish staff, social concerns volunteers, and other interested individuals are invited to join Catholic Charities leadership staff on Monday, June 26, for a leadership session from 8:00 AM to 12 noon at St. Francis of Assisi Parish.

The focus of the presentation and discussion will be the practical implications of "Deus Caritas Est", the first encyclical from Pope Benedict XVI. It highlights the importance of charity as essential to the mission of the Church.

As Catholic Charities and the parishes work to develop closer ties with each other and engage our members in service, advocacy and social justice activities, this letter from the Pope offers us guidance and support in our work. The presenter is Tom Chabolla, the Associate Director of Programs for the Catholic Campaign for Human Development at the U.S. Catholic Conference of Bishops. RSVP to Marvin Neu at (408) 325-5113.

SJV Spiritual Enrichment Plans

At the February 16 Town Hall meeting SJV Parishioners indicated that there is a deep desire for Adult Education and Spiritual Renewal Programs. In response to that goal, Lela Green Path Chavez was asked by the Parish Pastoral Council to gather a team of interested people. Lela did so, and reported at the May 6 meeting.

The team came up with the following vision statement:

Together we seek to provide opportunities for spiritual and parish renewal that will honor our common values and our diversity. We seek to nurture our community of faith by deepening our knowledge of sacred scripture, fostering our understanding of the Catholic faith, and enriching our prayer life so as to strengthen our relationship with God and our relationship with one another.

The Adult Education and Spiritual Renewal team will meet again on Monday, June 26, 7:00 PM at the Parish Office Center. Please pray about this and see if you are called to help our parish by participating on this team.

SJV Fiesta Report #2
by Leticia Scaringe

Fiesta 2006 2006 SJV Fiesta, "Teams Building Our Community": In appreciation for their hard work and dedication, the SJV Fiesta Committee was treated to wonderful dinner at the Drying Shed in San Jose last week.  Each Chairperson was individually acknowledged for helping to raise an estimated $50,000 to $55,000 for the church and school. Although the rainy weather tried to dampen our event, the SJV Fiesta crowd remained faithful and continued to have fun.  We wish to thank everyone that attended and supported our fiesta. Because of you, we made a profit.

The SJV Fiesta Committee would like to thank all the volunteers (booth workers, cooks, clean-up crew, electricians, set-up/tear-down crew, etc.). Also, thanks to the music and entertainment groups who shared their talent. Special thanks go to our sponsors (banners) and to all those who donated items.

Save the dates, May 18, 19, 20, 2007. See you at the 2007 SJV Fiesta. Click here to see some additional photos of Fiesta 2006.

St. Teresa of Ávila, the great 16th century spiritual master and church reformer, is considered by many to be among the most influential woman in the history of Christianity because of her detailed and profound description of the spiritual journey. In this 8-day retreat, Fr. Kevin Joyce will present the wide variety of spiritual experiences and challenges along the spiritual path contained in St. Teresa's autobiography, The Book of Her Life, and The Interior Castle. Retreatants are encouraged to bring with them both works as translated by Kavanaugh and Rodriguez (ICS Publications).

In 2004, Bishop McGrath founded SpiritSite, the Catholic Spirituality Center of the Diocese of San Jose, and appointed Father Kevin Joyce to be its first director. For the previous 12 years, he served as pastor of St. Maria Goretti Parish, a large multicultural parish in southeast San Jose. He completed his doctorate in spirituality at the Catholic University of America in 1991. Since then he has offered ongoing series of seminars, classes, and retreats based on the writings of the great Christian spiritual mentors.
