Trinity Sunday
by Ellen Turner

This weekend we celebrate the Feast of the Most Holy Trinity. Great scholars and theologians have tried to explain this concept, one God with three unique persons, so I Trinitywill not even attempt it. We all agree that it is impossible for the human creature to fully understand the nature of God. As they say, it is a mystery.

When I think about the Trinity, I recall how we believe that we are made in the image and likeness of God. This God we reflect is a Trinity, a small community. This reminds me that we are also called to exist in community, each person having a specific role to play in order to fully express our humanity. We are all part of the whole. This is one way we are made in the image and likeness of God.

Parish Building Update
by Barbara Heil

The Parish Multipurpose Center - the building process has begun! Signs of the impending construction of our Parish Multi-purpose facility will continue to blossom throughout the summer. If you find yourself on Hyland Avenue and are curious about the temporary cyclone fencing and the flurry of workmen be assured that it is all good news! The activity surrounds the installation of a new electrical service that will support notConstruction only the new building, but give additional power to the church and school buildings. The electrical work began over the weekend and should be completed by the first of July.

Geologists have also been on site taking soil samples to ensure that our multi-purpose building pad will be on solid ground! The new building plans have been submitted to the City of San Jose Planning and Building Departments. Our hope is that the site work namely the removal of St. Francis Hall and the expansion of the parking lot will be completed before the school year starts in late August.

Stayed tuned for further news including how you can help with this exciting process! The dream is finally becoming a reality!

Editors Note: Many have asked about the screen that we are purchasing with the extra money from this year's ADA collections. The screen will be used to enhance liturgies by projecting words to hymns and maybe for multimedia prayer services. The screen has been ordered and will be installed in the next few weeks. Since we have graduations this week, there may be a short delay, but the screen will be installed soon.

Local News

Alum Rock Farmers' Market Alum Rock Farmers' Market opened on Sunday, June 4. The day was a big success. Parishioner Gilne Tosco was one of the prime movers in bringing this wonderful event to our neighborhood. As part of the JustFaith program, Gilne learned about the importance of buying locally. In addition to being able to buy fresh fruit and vegetables directly from the farmers, a Farmers Market saves our environment as the food is not shipped from another country, and the profit stays right here in our state, providing our community with jobs. The food is fresher, because it isn't shipped so far, and lesser known varieties are available. One of the other real benefits is getting the family out in the morning for some fresh air shopping, and meeting neighbors and friends.

New Neighborhood Voice, the Newsletter of the East Foothills Neighborhoods, published by Judy Thompson, is chock full of interesting stories about our part of the valley. To sign up to receive this informative and entertaining local newsletter visit the web site www.nnvesj.org. This month's issue features a story about SJV parishioners Ray and Ellen Turner. To go directly to the story about Ray and Ellen Turner, click here. Also, a story about SJV parishioner Leticia Scaringe's sister, Berta, and her three sons, Victor, Joshua, and Garrett, is in the same issue. To go directly to the story about "Three Fine Young Writers," click here.

Opportunities to help out at SJV: There are a couple of events coming up in our parish that could use your help. First of all, on the afternoon of Sunday, July 2, we will say "good bye" to our current pastor, Fr. Tim Kidney, and welcome our new pastor, Fr. Francisco Rios. We could use a few good people to organize this event. Contact David Cortese at the POC or dcortese@sjvsj.net. Secondly, we would like to get a good start on organizing our parish picnic, which is usually held on a Sunday in August. If you would like to work on that project, please contact Ellen Turner at 272-9234 or newsletter@sjvnews.net.

From the Bookshelf
by Ellen Turner

Married? Engaged? In a relationship? Wishing you were any of these? Dr. Robin L. Smith's book, Lies at the Altar: the Truth About Great Marriages is a must read. Dr. Lies at the AlterSmith is a licensed psychologist who regularly appears on the Oprah Winfrey Show. She also teaches at Eastern Baptist Theological Seminary.

The main point of her book is that marriage (or a real relationship) requires two adults willing and able to actively participate in the relationship. (Or as she might put it, marriage requires two grown-ups to show up.) Too often people enter into a relationship without ever addressing really important issues. They will spend incredible energy on planning the perfect fairy-tale wedding day, but never take the time to address the meaning of the vows they are taking.

She addresses all the unspoken needs, the unasked questions, hidden agendas, and crazy expectations that so many marriages contain. The book uses short stories of couples to illustrate the many ways a couple can be miss-communicating, and shows us how we might turn around a relationship that has slipped off focus. She has a chapter for each phrase in the traditional wedding vows and then includes a list of 276 questions that could be used by any couple to open dialog.

I am buying a copy for each of my children and I recommend this book to everyone who is (or ever will be) married.

Family Faith Formation
by Linda Rokita

"Faith needs to be living...like any living thing, a person's
faith must grow and develop or it will wither and die."

(Larry Livingston, The Catechist Connection, June/July 2005)

Our community at St. John Vianney is dedicated to helping you and your children discover a "living faith" through the ministry of catechesis... Family Faith. Together, with our catechists, we serve as guideposts to our children, our youth and one another in becoming a Church of lifelong learners.

Family Faith seeks to:

  • Give our community an understanding of the Church's stories, beliefs and values.
  • Encourage active participation in the sacramental and prayer life of the Catholic community.
  • Identify and support justice concerns, leading to outreach efforts to those in need.
  • Offer on-going enrichment classes for our children, youth, adults, catechists, and volunteers.

Family Faith welcomes you and your family (pre-school through adult) to participate in the many educational and sacramental programs offered through this community:

  • Basic Faith Formation (Discovering God, Jesus, the Holy Spirit and Church)
  • Sacramental Preparation (Baptism, Reconciliation, Eucharist, Confirmation)
  • Ongoing Participation (Our Role in Community, Our Commission to Serve)

Faith AliveThis Fall, we are excited to offer a weekly fellowship, Faith Alive, for any adult who wishes to explore their personal faith. This fellowship will provide a time for prayer, personal reflection, candid discussion, and the opportunity to ask your own questions about God, Catholic traditions and "everyday" faith.

We hope that you will set aside one day a week to enrich the spiritual journey of you and your family members! Please call the Catechetical Ministry office at 258-7832 x18 English, or 258-7832 x30 espaņol. For more information, click here.
