Transition Team
by Ellen Turner

The SJV Pastor Transition Team is charged with helping the parish, the out-going pastor, and the in-coming pastor, deal with the changes involved. They are currently gathering information, such as a financial report, a facilities report, and as sense of the state of the parish from the viewpoint of parishioners. With this information they will create a report for the new pastor so he can settle in more quickly.

You have an important part to play in this transition too. Please reflect on these five key questions, and be prepared to share your ideas on them:

  • What did you feel when you first heard that our pastor was leaving?
  • What do we need to keep?
  • What do we need to let go of?
  • What do we need to develop, begin, create for the future?
  • What gifts, qualities, talents do the people of this parish bring to such a process?

The Transition Team will be approaching many of the groups in the parish to seek their answers to these questions. At each listening session, 2-4 members of the TransitionGood Listener Team will do active listening. This means that they will solicit ideas about the present and future needs of the parish from parishioners, without judging or responding to what they hear. All the information gathered from these discussions will be confidential. There will be no names of individuals or groups associated with the responses. The team members may take simple notes to capture ideas, but they will not include any identification information in the final report. Concepts will only be included in the report if they show up in more than one listening session, so as to indicate a trend, or a major need or problem.

As the Transition Team visits the various groups, they want to speak to the members of the group, not particularly the leadership of the group. In fact, in order for group members to feel free to speak, staff members and non-staff leaders of the group are not to be included in the session. The Transition Team can hear their concerns separately.

For example, I am the chair of the Communication Team. When the Transition Team (of which I am a member, along with my husband) came to the Communication Team, I left the room so that the members of the Communication Team would not be influenced by my ideas, but were free to speak their own ideas. My husband was not one of the members of the Transition Team at that listening, for the same reason.

The Transition Team will schedule a separate meeting for staff, and could do so for group leaders also. If you are a parishioner who is not a member of any group the Transition Team is meeting with, or if you miss the session due to schedule issues, you can arrange to meet with a delegation from the Transition Team, or attend the General Listening Session on June 25th as listed below. Please do not try to give your ideas and concerns to one member of the Transition Team alone. The process requires at least two members of the Transition Team to officially hear your concerns. This is so we can be sure of what is heard and avoid giving one person more responsibility than is reasonable. Transition Team members are:

Ann McEntee
Nicholas Adams Helen Arreola Vic English
Pat Garcia Rich Haro Ann Kangas
Fernando Pena Patricia Pena Armando Rivera
Toni Rossi Ellen Turner Ray Turner

The Transition Team will add the ideas from the recent Town Hall Meeting to any other ideas that surface from these key questions. The General Listening Session in English will be held on Sunday, June 25, at 11:30 AM in the Main Hall, and in Spanish at 1:30 PM, also in the Main Hall.

This is your chance to speak your mind. Don't miss out!

Jose Luis Manzo from 408 and his posse performed to Kung Fu Fighting. Many positives were recieved about the entertainment. The cleanup crew did a tough job extremely well."

People Acting in Community Together Make an Impact
by Rosana Madrigal

Saint John Vianney Parish members joined more than thirteen-hundred at the People Acting in Community Together or PACT Forum with the top five candidates for San Jose Mayor at the Parkside Center on a very rainy Sunday afternoon. Based on PACT's model of See, Judge and Act, members asked the five candidates to sign a covenant or commit to several items.

The PACT members' request for Education funding included a video interview with Bill and Melinda Gates with Oprah, and a plea from Cecilia, a Lucha student. After making the case, PACT members asked the next mayor to raise $10M (ten million dollars) for start-up funding for small schools, $600K (six hundred thousand dollars) for a pilot program to extend the school day, and find a new significant stream of revenue for community centers, youth and senior programs.

Following a PACT member's first-hand experience with less than adequate housing, another PACT member asked that 30% of affordable housing be for extremely poor families. Another PACT member asked that each person will be treated with dignityHousing regardless of his/her immigration status, and asked that San Jose Police and other city staff not be used as federal immigration agents.

PACT also wants a half-day retreat with the new San Jose Mayor. San Jose Vice Mayor Cindy Chavez, Council-member David Cortese and former Council-member David Pandori agreed to all the requests. Council-member Chuck Reed only agreed to one, and business leader Michael Mulcahy refused all of them. A Saint John Vianney PACT member says Mayor Ron Gonzales did honor his covenant with PACT.

PACT and Saint John Vianney Parish do not make political endorsements.
Therefore, this is only an informational piece.

SJV School 8th Grade Graduation Retreat
by Nicholas Adams

On Monday, May 15, graduating SJV school students participated in their 8th grade graduation retreat, themed Strength for the Journey, at the Presentation Center. This was their retreat, their time to reflect and pray.

The day was a combination of praying for and thanking their fellow graduates and teachers. It was also an opportunity for them to talk with some SJV alumni who are in high school and college. They were very open with their retreat leaders, and had a wonderful experience.

Please join me in thanking this year’s leaders for their hard work and hours of planning: Janelle Adams ’01, Jaclyn Avila ’04, Brittany Barry ’02, Stephen Diangson ’02, Scott Fredianelli ’02, Kelley Gause ’03, Jennifer Gorgulho ’03, Paul Luna ’99, Sarah O’Dea ’04, and Gabriel Williams-Taime ‘99.

I hope to work with such talented alumni again, next year! Congratulations to the graduating class of 2006! GO VIKINGS!

Prayerfully yours, Nicholas Adams ’99, Retreat Director

Special Thanks to All Those who made
Mother's Day Layette a Success!!

by Bruno Martinez

Mother's Day Layette Mother's day was a flurry of activity at St. John Vianney. The family Mass at 9:00 AM provided amazing hospitality with food and pins handed out at the door to all mothers. At the noon Spanish Mass, Spanish Youth Ministry handed out roses to all mothers and the Quinceañera girls provided hospitality with chocolate covered strawberries, bananas and cookies.

On top of all that activity, generous parishioners donated about 10 grocery bags of clothing for infants and toddlers. Also donated was $1584, which will goMother's Day Layette a long way toward purchase of diapers. Our parish, through St. Vincent de Paul, gives out about $300 worth of diapers every two months. Your donations will be put to excellent use in this ministry. Thank you very much.

If you would like to volunteer for future Community Ministry events or have ideas for other events, please contact Bruno Martinez in the Community Ministry-Outreach office at: (408) 258-7832 x23 or bmartinez@sjvsj.net.

Farmers Market Coming Soon
by Ellen Turner

Farmer's MargketThe Alum Rock Village Certified Farmers Market will have its Grand Opening on June 4 at the corner of Alum Rock Ave and White Road. The market will be open every Sunday, from June 4 through November 18, rain or shine.

A Certified Farmers Market is a wonderful idea for the following reasons:

  • Neighbors can buy fresh, organic fruits and vegetables right near home.
  • Local California farmers can find a local market, saving middle-man costs.
  • Far less fossil fuel is used than when your "fresh" goods come from Chile.
  • You can be assured of the safety of the food.
  • You can meet your neighbors every Sunday after Mass as you browse the market.

There are probably a lot of other reasons too, but we hope these are enough to get you interested.

For more information on Certified Farmers Markets, visit the web site: www.cafarmersmarkets.com
