Go And Bear Fruit

It was not you who chose me, but I who chose you
and appointed you to go and bear fruit

Speak Your Mind
by Ellen Turner

The SJV Pastor Transition Team met with Sr. Pat Mitchell on Tuesday evening for a training session in the new process used in our diocese when a parish is assigned a new Speak Your Mind central leader. (The term "central leader" is being used now because in some cases the central leader may be a trained lay person. In our case, of course, we will be getting a new pastor, Fr. Francisco Rios, currently serving as pastor at Mary, Star of the Sea in Alviso.)

The process involves a team of parishioners who will be working very hard in the next few weeks to shepherd the parish through the transition process. The team will work with the incoming and outgoing pastors to assist with any issues that exist. They will also gather specific objective data (financial report and facilities report) as well as subjective information (the concerns of parishioners and staff).

The Transition Team will work hard to provide clear communication, and will help the parish welcome the new pastor as well as say good-bye to Fr. Tim.

You have an important part to play in this transition too. Please reflect on these five key questions, and be prepared to share your ideas on them:

What did you feel when you first heard that our pastor was leaving?
What do we need to keep?
What do we need to let go of?
What do we need to develop, begin, create for the future?
What gifts, qualities, talents do the people of this parish bring to such a process?

The Transition Team will be approaching many of the groups in the parish to seek their answers to these questions.

Ann McEntee
Nicholas Adams Helen Arreola Vic English
Pat Garcia Rich Haro Ann Kangas
Fernando Pena Patricia Pena Armando Rivera
Toni Rossi Ellen Turner Ray Turner

They will add the ideas from the recent Town Hall Meeting to any other ideas that surface from these key questions. There will also be a general listening session in English on Sunday, June 25, at 11:30 AM in the Main Hall, and in Spanish at 1:30 PM, also in the Main Hall.

This is your chance to speak your mind. Don't miss out!

SJV Parent Participation Sunday Preschool
by Tanya Rollins

St. John Vianney's Parent Participation Sunday Preschool has been meeting in the last seven months during the 10:30 AM Sunday Mass. Parents bring their children to the preschool room (located in St. Francis Hall) up to 15 minutes before Mass. Participating parents take turns teaching 2-1/2 to 5 year-olds about God on a level they can understand. The parent in charge teaches the Sunday Reading either through story telling, a coloring project or craft; and the children share in a snack together. Sunday Preschool

"Our daughter, Olivia, has really enjoyed the program and is eager to go to her 'Church School' on Sundays. We love that the program helps reinforce the things of God in ways that she understands (coloring, story time, even unstructured playtime). This helps our daughter grow not only mentally, physically, but also spiritually. We love it because while Olivia is in the preschool program, Richard and I can be present (physically and spiritually) for the Liturgy. With the preschool program we all win!" -Veronica Wildanger

"The Preschool Program during the 10:30 AM mass has allowed my husband and me to attend Mass together with our older children. No longer do we have to take turns attending or walking out because our preschooler can't sit still. At the same time, our youngster is able to interact with other children his age and learn about God's message at his level. Parents, thank you so much for making this possible!" -Julie Ramirez

If you are interested in participating in the Parent Participating Sunday Preschool program (the next session begins in September), please call Tanya Rollins 258-7832 ext. 18.

Guatemala
by Amy McEntee
the third part of a three part story

Refuge International works to involve the community that they work in, to help them meet their own needs. In fact, while we were there, we stayed in the homes with the families and we all traveled together and ate together. The villages that they work with are very grateful, and also as small improvements are made the villages begin to take more control of the projects. Currently, Refuge International is working on building a hospital in Sartsun. The village of Sartsun has put together a local committee of indigenous and non-indigenous men and women to help guide the building of the hospital, and to help identify needs.

My experience with the group was great. Click here to see photos. During the week that I was there we saw 1000 patients and went to 4 different villages to deliver health care.Refuge InternationalThe most excited part was when we went to a village that was a long 6 hour trip away, first in a boat in the river, and then in trucks high up into the rain forest, to bring health care to a village of 500 people that had never had a doctor come to their village. I think we saw all 500 people as patients over two days. The highlight of the trip for me was getting to deliver a baby in the middle of the night, on the night between our two days, and getting to name him. I named him Jaime (Spanish for James, of course after my Dad). There was concern that the people of this village might not be welcoming because they had never had foreigners in their town, but Refuge International does such a great job of working with the communities, and addressing their needs, that the community asks Refuge International to see to it that we were not treated as foreigners at all. In fact we received a great welcome and lots of appreciation.

Refuge International is always looking for volunteers and donations. They do a lot of great work, but do have very limited resources. Below is information about how to make donations and how to contact them.

To sponsor a child to go to school it costs $45 a month for 10 months. Send funds to Refuge International at 104 N. Montgomery Gilmer, Texas 75644.

Specify on the check that you want it to go for the education fund. If you want to adopt a particular child for the school year, they can tell you who that is, and you can get letters from them. If you just want to do a month that is GREAT also.

To volunteer or send other types of donations, you can also send money to the above address or contact them through the web site at www.RefugeInternational.com.

Editor's note: Amy McEntee, a graduate of St. John Vianney Parish School, and daughter of Jim and Ann McEntee, is a doctor at a Bay Area hospital.

Emergency Housing Consortium
by Ginny Pfluger, Manager of In-Kind Donations, EHC

Recently EHC LifeBuilders received a grant to house 42 chronically homeless alcoholics. Like most grants, some things are covered and others not. It is that "not covered" category that I present to you.

ECH Life BuildersChronically homeless individuals have no furnishings for an apartment. Our goal is to provide them with gently used things. The attached list is very basic and much needed. If you have items to donate, be assured they will be put to good use in the next months. The list does not include clothing and large furniture items, but recliner chairs, if not stained are accepted.

All items should be clean and in working condition, as dump fees to dispose of unusable items means a cost to us. Delivery can be made to Small Mall, our site in Milpitas by appointment (call 262-3597) or to 2011 Little Orchard Street, 7 days between 9-3. Depending on your location a volunteer may be able to pick up items. Call to schedule.

Partially furnishing 42 apartments is a big challenge, but recalling the many new items that came in during the holiday season, I know it is possible because you are generous and care for those less fortunate among us. Together we extend compassion to the homeless by giving them housing and the items needed to live under a roof.

Thank you again for whatever you can do for, and with, EHC LifeBuilders. And please tell your family, friends and co-workers of this project.
