Constant
Renewal under the Guidance of the Spirit Renewal implies continuity, yet it outgrows the old. The founder of the Ford Moor Company would hardly recognize his own first assembly line if he could see the Ford plants now. Yet basically it is the same. His successors have renewed the process of producing constantly in the spirit of the founder. They would be unfaithful to his great vision if they were still working as he did so many years ago.
The early leaders of
the Church, commissioned by our Lord to continue his work on earth, faced a
similar problem of renewal and continuity. Should Christianity be a
renewal movement in the framework of existing Judaism? There should
indeed be continuity, for Jesus had said that he did not intend to do away
with the law and the prophets (Mark 5:17). Yet, should Gentiles, who
joined the Church, be forced to observe so many Jewish laws, especially
those conditioned by time and culture? |
