Doubting Thomas

"Give thanks to the Lord for he is good,
his love is everlasting"

Faith and Fellowship
2nd Sunday of Easter

"Birds of a feather flock together."  With respect to certain instincts, we humans are no different from other mammals flocking together when a thunderstorm is threatening.  We need one another's company and inspiration to keep going.  Marital love can survive only if the partners daily foster togetherness with all the means nature and religion suggest.  The survival of faith is subject to the same conditions.  A Christianity lived "alone," all by oneself, does not last.

The First Reading (Acts 5:12-16) describes the communal life of the early congregation in Jerusalem.  "Koinonia (fellowship, brotherhood, communion) should be an important element in the life of Christians of all ages.  Faith, like love, is constantly exposed to the temptation of doubt and indifference.  We need one another's support.  You are blessed if you have/belong to a family where Christian fellowship is part of family life where the members pray/worship together, read the Bible together, practice the Christian values of love, justice, mutual respect, decency, and concern together.  In such a case, the members of the family carry one another and that fellowship keeps faith alive.

Fellowship should also be part of every congregation, even though this poses a problem in our large parish.  We need belonging!  Our Parish Council should discuss available options.  Participate in some activity at St. John Vianney.  Do not be a loner!

Without being exclusive, have friends who feel the same as you do in matters of faith.  And at meetings, contribute to the value of "belonging" for all.  Listen, be open to others, exchange ideas and experiences, share time and talents.  The brethren "devoted themselves to the teaching of the apostles and to the communal life" (Acts 2:42).  The above suggest how to realize this in our time and culture.

Learn the Bible ... from one of the Most inspiring Teachers in the Bible Timeline Logo Catholic Church Today.  An 24-week video course that will transform your knowledge of the bible!  The "Great Adventure Bible Timeline" will give you the tools for a lifetime of enriching bible study and devotional reading.  Developed and presented by Catholic theologian and author Jeff Cavins, this video Bible Timeline seminar will give you "the big picture" of salvation history by showing you how people, places, events and themes of the bible fit together.

On Thursday evenings join us for a Bible Timeline course that is an overview of the entire bible.  Registration is required for the course.  If you are interested, pick up a registration flyer in the front of the church or call the parish office at (408) 258-7832.

St. John Vianney Parish Mission Statement

We, the people of St. John Vianney Parish, SJV Mission Statement seek to promote the Gospel through evangelization, worship and community outreach to a diverse community in the San Jose eastern foothills. We recognize the community to be ethnically, economically, intergenerational and domestically mixed, and therefore resolve to strive for a broad vision of this parish's needs in light of the Gospel.

We are committed to fulfill the above goals by working together, offering supportive presence to one another, and arriving at decision through prayer, active listening and consensus.
